Exam rooms are often simple in layout, consisting of the exam bed and a workstation with a few chairs. Lighting in the exam room can be used to calm a patient, with soothing dimmable lighting for general ambient prior to the exam, and high-level exam function for the doctors. Additionally, it should provide high R9 values for color rendition, be glare-free, and adjustable. Typically, additional medical exam lights that provide higher footcandle levels are also used. These typically have adjustable intensity and focus. Proper task illumination at the sink area and workspace are also typically used. Even illumination allows a caretaker to enter critical notes in a patient’s file or review scans. It should be positioned both over a wash basin and over the work plane with proper cutoff to minimize glare.
