Stairwells

Lighting in stairwells should be designed to maximize safety, visibility, and compliance with building codes. Illumination levels must meet or exceed code requirements—typically at least 1 fc on steps and landings, with newer standards recommending  a minimum of 10 fc during use. Emergency lighting is essential, ensuring that luminaires remain on for at least 90 minutes during a power outage. Fixtures should be strategically placed to minimize shadows and glare, reducing the risk of accidents. Incorporating motion sensors can improve energy efficiency, but they must be set to keep luminaires on for a sufficient period after activation to maintain safety.
